Medical Device Design: Scalpel Design Process

In terms of medical treatment, different scalpels are used for different parts and different surgical symptoms. How to achieve precise treatment without damaging normal tissue has always been the goal pursued by the medical community, so this directly affects the precision of the scalpel, process materials and other issues. It is also a very big challenge for design companies in terms of scalpel design. A scalpel is a commonly used surgical instrument in surgery and internal medicine. A scalpel must be used in any operation. It can be seen that a scalpel is a necessary condition for surgery and is very important.

Usually, a scalpel includes a blade and a handle, which are combined when used, and after use, the blade and handle are separated and disposed of separately. Since the blade of the scalpel is very sharp, there is a risk of scratching the operator during the disposal process, causing unnecessary harm to the medical staff.

1. The overall design of the scalpel

A scalpel includes a handle and a blade, the blade is installed at one end of the handle, and also includes a blade sheath, the blade sheath is a rectangular shell, one end of the blade sheath is provided with a socket, both sides of the blade sheath are provided with strip-shaped protrusions parallel to the axis of the blade sheath, and one end of the handle away from the blade is provided with a mounting groove, the width of the installation groove is matched with the blade sheath, and the inner side wall of the installation groove is provided with a strip-shaped groove matched with the strip-shaped protrusion. The utility model is provided with a safety sheath on the basis of a conventional scalpel. The safety sheath is arranged at the end of the handle of the scalpel through a sliding groove, and is used as a part of the handle when not in use. After use, remove from the end of the handle to protect the blade as a safety sheath for the blade.

2. Scalpel sheath design

The length of the blade sheath matches the length of the installation groove, the inner height of the blade sheath matches the thickness of the blade, and the outer height of the blade sheath matches the thickness of the shank at the installation groove. The inner height of the blade sheath is an interference fit with the blade, so that the blade can be stuck inside the sheath through the upper and lower inner walls of the sheath so that it will not slip off. When the blade sheath is not in use, the end of the handle is installed, so its height and length are the same as the blade. The installation grooves at the handle are matched to ensure the user's operating feeling when using the scalpel. The end of the blade sheath away from the socket is arc-shaped, and the arc of the arc matches the arc of the handle of the scalpel. In order to facilitate the use of the operator, the ends of the handle of the scalpel are generally arc-shaped. When the safety sheath is not in use, as a part of the handle of the scalpel, the original curvature of the handle is also maintained, and the original convenience of use of the scalpel is maintained.

3. Scalpel handle design

The mounting end of the blade on the handle is provided with a slider that pushes the blade to move along the axis of the scalpel. After the scalpel is used, for safety reasons, the blade is usually removed from the handle by means of hemostatic forceps. Because the safety sheath is installed on the blade, the danger of the blade is largely eliminated, so the slider is used to push the blade down from the back to the front to enhance the convenience of operation.

Over time, new alloys and better construction have resulted in smaller, more portable tools and sharper, more precise blades. Especially with surgical blades, precision is a crucial factor. The sharper the blade, the cleaner and more precise the cut that can be made, and the faster the wound will heal. When designing, industrial design companies should fully consider the design requirements, and make relative adjustments and designs for different design requirements, so that the scalpel is more suitable for the use background.
